John Cage - 4'33

John Cage’s famous 1952 composition consists of 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence. My aim with the project was to create a visual representation of the song, which presents a challenge as the track’s content is based on the listener’s environment.

This was resolved through using an audio visual programming tool (Isadora) and creating an audio visualiser that would react to microphone inputs.
I made a system which creates geometric patterns
that look like mountains. Each hill represents 3 seconds
of audio and it’s structure is defined by the volume and frequency of the sound.

The project concluded with creating several recordings of 4’33, and compiling all the outputs
into an A1 poster.
